Previsualization for “Frozen Music”, a generative video installation.
Sound sculptures for a large projection surface.
‘Frozen Music’ is a generative video installation for a large projection surface. Sound is presented as a three-dimensional sculpture that becomes ‘frozen’ in time. Suspended in space, each form delicately shifts and moves to expose intricate qualities. As an audience observes, they experience sound as an architectural element, as each sculpture is created in real-time.
|Materials||2-5 DLP projectors or LED Wall, 1 computer, speakers.|
|Running Time||Indeterminate. Generative composition.|
Large video projection with multi-channel sound.
One video image is projected onto a wall in a large exhibit space. The surface is ideally 15 meters long, covered by multiple video projectors. Rear projection is recommended or LED Wall.
A multi-channel speaker set-up is used to spatialize sound. The minimum number of speakers are dependent on the size of the projection wall.
Finding beauty in automated processes, Frozen Music is a video installation of visually composed sound.
Sound and image melt into one another, twisting and intertwining in a strange synesthesia. Digital sculptures emerge from cinematic ambiences and delicate melodies while the immense scale of the piece immerses audiences into an impressive environment where sound seems to stand still, becoming “frozen” in time.
Collaborators Cadie Desbiens-Desmeules (aka Push 1 stop) and Michael Gary Dean were initially fascinated by the beauty of what sound could look like, “the beauty of the unseen”. When trying to observe sound waveforms as images, sound is usually changing so rapidly that it is often impossible to appreciate a single moment. In Frozen Music, the artists explore a variety of techniques to give the illusion that sound is standing still, while interpreting each shape through additional sound and music.
Frozen Music is a co-production between L.E.V. Festival and Gijón Fundación Municipal de Cultura (FMC) with additional support from Canada Council for the Arts.
