Previz – A virtual audio-visual performance reflecting on the consumption of media art.

« Previz » refers to a previsualization: a method artists use to create 3D digital representations of how an artwork will look when installed, often including computer generated people to represent an audience. It subtly reveals how essential the audience is to experiencing art. These images are frequently used to promote and document exhibitions, with the perfect artificial representation being favored over a real-life photograph of people engaging with the work.

In « Previz » , the latest artwork by audio-visual artists Cadie Desbiens-Desmeules and Michael Dean, this practice is taken to a new space. 3D modelling isn’t just used to represent the work, the 3D modelling is the work. The flat 2D screen on which the visuals would normally be displayed has been placed within a 3D environment. Computer generated characters observe and engage with the screen, sometimes viewing it on their phone or laptop or experiencing it as part of a Zoom meeting.

This is an artwork within an artwork, using layers and refraction to emphasize the importance of witnesses in making a work relevant and provoking questions on what the future context may be for media art.

Cadie Desbiens-Desmeules (Push 1 stop) and Tetsuji Ohno (Intercity-Express) present INFLUENCED, a new collaborative work reflecting about the increasing role technology and artificial intelligence play in the course of humanity.

The performance of 35 minutes is based on a video installation of Desbiens-Desmeules, Alter Ego.

Push 1 stop turns the technology back on itself, hacking Instagram’s API to expose an unfiltered glimpse of human activity before it is skewered by an algorithm. Images posted in real-time under popular hashtags are rearranged to take the form of AI-generated “influencer” faces. The multi-layered work invites the viewer to reflect on the extent to which humans are both intertwined with technology and manipulated by it.

ALTER EGO

Alter Ego is a video installation that exposes the increasing role technology and artificial intelligence play in the course of humanity.

Cadie Desbiens-Desmeules turns the technology back on itself, hacking Instagram’s API to present an unfiltered glimpse of human activity before it is skewered by an algorithm. Images posted in real time under popular hashtags are rearranged to take the form of AI-generated ‘influencers’ faces. The generative artwork invites the viewer to reflect on the extent to which humans are both intertwined with technology and manipulated by it.

Using popular hashtags such as #love or #beautiful, the artist is able to display the images that are being posted, globally, in real time. The viewer is therefore able to see the raw output stream of human activity before it is subject to the selection process of the Instagram algorithm. Taken individually, these images give an insight into the zeitgeist of our times, showing how people are influenced by the platform, and how our behaviour is bent under its influence. As images are being posted, they are rearranged to take the form of AI-generated ‘influencers’. The idea of the artist is to create AI generated ‘influencers’ composed of individual images of people who are often engaged in this influencer style behaviour. As the AI is being trained using machine learning and faces that are available online, the most numerous faces are those of celebrities. The resulting composite faces created by the AI reflect mainstream conventions of beauty in our societies. The fact that an AI creates faces resembling those used by advertisers to influence our behaviour and consumption habits, and that these images are composed of people often engaged in the same influencer behaviour, shows how blurry the lines between commercial content and authentically produced content have become. The installation presents an opportunity for the viewer to catch a glimpse behind the experiment that we are all a part of.

Dimensions Flatscreens must be at least 55 inches.
Running Time Indeterminate. Generative composition.
Setup 1 to 3 Flatscreen monitors are installed vertically in an exhibit space.

The video system uses Instagram API to capture in real-time hundreds of photos of the most popular hashtags. A High-Speed internet connection for constant streaming is required.

Other format such as video wall display or video projection can be discussed with the artist.

Membrane

Push 1 stop and Wiklow present « Membrane » an algorithmic performance for transparent materials.

Membrane is an audio-visual work that merges live, generative performance with installation art.

The piece centres around “volumetric projections”, filling venues with massive 3D sculptures that hover in mid-air as they are projected into a thick haze of smoke. On stage, two performers engage with their custom coded software, generating rhythms, melodies and visual projections in real-time. The performance is a sort of three-way collaboration as the two performers feed off of each other in an improvised performance while collaborating with a third member: their generative system.

Each performance follows a practised choreography of several “scenes” that make-up the show. But every iteration is different, evolving with new unexpected discoveries and happy surprises that are embraced as part of the live performance experience.

For Push 1 stop & Wiklow, “Membrane” represents an alternative form of projection art, bringing digital forms into physical space and exploring live generative art and all the fun and risks that come with it.

“Dry ice hisses into the dark room and white shapes strobe through the air, pulsing and oscillating around the crowd. Sharp scribbles synchronise with their minimal dance music, swelling into huge circles of light above our heads, an impressive monochrome take on Robin Fox’s rainbow laser projections that do a good job of placing us inside the invisible sound frequencies, with lines rippling and vibrating, sketching out the music in space.”

NAscent – Full Dome

Immersive full dome movie
“NAscent” is an immersive project created in collaboration with Vergil Sharkya, an experimental music composer specialized in hypercomposition and Push 1 stop, an interactive media artist. The work was presented at the Société des Arts Technologiques (SAT) for 3 weeks in Febuary 2018. The film is inspired by « string theory ». According to this scientific hypothesis, the universe is filled by one dimensional strings and not by point-like particles. These strings vibrate and propagate through tension, similar to the behaviour of an elastic. NAscent explores this tension; the idea that everything is connected and that the universe possesses some 11 dimensions.
